Hi, I’m Jaymie Rosenbluth for About.com and today I am going to show you what happens during laser hair removal on the lip.
Preparing for Laser Hair Removal
There are very important steps you must follow prior to your laser hair removal treatment. First, you must avoid waxing, plucking, tweezing, or bleaching for at least 3 weeks before your appointment. You should shave the area the day before your treatment. Also, you must avoid sun exposure for at least 2 weeks prior to your treatment. Tanned skin increases the risks of adverse side effects. Lastly, any antibiotics must be discontinued 14 days prior to your treatment. If all these rules are followed you are now ready to come in for your laser hair removal treatment.
Consult the Laser Hair Removal Technician
Upon arrival you will be asked to fill out an intake form which allows the technician to learn a little more about you, your concerns, and any medications you are taking. After you fill out the form, the technician will review it and take you to the room. The technician will provide you with a brief consultation where she will examine your hair and skin type, and discuss with you the risks, benefits and expectations from your laser hair removal treatment. If you are the right candidate for laser hair removal, you can begin your treatment immediately after the consultation.
During the Laser Hair Removal Treatment
You will lie down on a treatment bed and the technician will provide you with safety glasses to protect your eyes against the laser light. Your technician will then adjust the settings on the laser machine based on your skin type. It is very important to have a skilled and experienced technician, because improper settings can put you at higher risk of burning and skin discoloration. The technician will ask if you are ready and then she will begin treatment. The laser will be directed at your upper lip and you will feel a slight pinching sensation, similar to a snap of a rubber band on the skin. Our lasers have a built in cooling system which allows for maximum comfort during treatment. Laser hair removal on the lip is relatively painless and the treatment takes no longer than 10 minutes.
After the Treatment:
After you are done, your technician will apply cortisone to the lip. Your upper lip will be slightly red, similar to after a wax, however, this should calm down shortly after. You are required to stay out of the sun for at least 2 weeks after your treatment, and you should always wear an SPF on your face when outside. You need a minimum of 6 treatments for optimal results, so make sure to schedule your next appointment with the front desk. Follow-up appointments should be scheduled at intervals of 4-6 weeks. If you have any questions after your treatment or experience any adverse side effects, you should call the spa immediately.
