Transcript:How to Wear an Updo With a Long Face

Hi, my name is Tye Coe for About.com. I am a celebrity hair, make-up and fashion stylist. Today, we're here at the wonderful BeSu Salon and Day Spa here in New York City and I am going to show you how to create an updo for a long face.

Hair Tips for Long Faces

In creating an updo for a long face, the one thing that you want to remember is you do not want to put too much height in the top portion of the hairdo because it is going to make your face look a whole lot longer. So you want to minimize the height through the crown area and soften the face with pieces in the front, and I am going to show you how to do that. So we are going to start with leaving out an ear to ear section in the front. We are going to add a little bit of pomade to get rid of the flyaways and we want to keep this area very slick and tight through the top.

Twist Hair and Pin it Up

We are going to start like you would a ponytail and then rolling upwards or twisting upwards. Once you have a nice twisting effect you can begin by pinning. You want to pin at the base so that the twist is showing and tuck in all of the extra hair. Okay, so once you have everything pinned up nice and tight, you are going to finish it off with a bit of hairspray to get rid of the flyaways. And then we are going to start on the front section. For a longer face it is very important that you structure the front section to soften the length of your face.

Finished Updo for Long Face Shape

Make sure you leave out a little bit of hair and then the remaining hair you are going to incorporate into the rest of the updo. We are going to incorporate the last bit with twisting and pinning it in. With the front sections that you have left out, you want to just add a little soft curl to it. A big barrel curling iron would be great. Okay, so in finishing your style you just want to make sure in the front section to take away of the length of the face, that you kind of angle the front going across your face. Once you do that, finish it off with some hairspray. And this is how you create an updo for a long face.
