Transcript:How to Wear Hair Long Over 50

Hi, I am professional stylist Kelly Britton for About.com Style, and I am going to show you how to wear your hair long if you are over 50.

Things to Remember for Long Hair Over 50

An important thing to remember when styling your hair long is that with age, you lose body, so you are going to have to add styling volumizing products, foam or mousse, or some root lifting spray. Second, as your hair gets longer, it weighs it down, so you need to layer your hair. Visit your stylists and have them cut some long layers or face framing layers, anything to help lift the hair from the root. Third, you need styling tools, a large round brush, a blow dryer and curling iron to achieve the look we want today.

Cut Layers Into Long Hair

Connie has long hair without any layers, so I am going to style some layering into her hair. I am going to give her some long layers to give her hair some nice bounce. Now that you have layers cut into your hair, you will want to add some styling products. Use a volumizing spray that will lift the roots. Lift up each section of hair and spray lightly where the hair meets the scalp. Do not use too much or it will make the hair too heavy.

Curl Long Hair for Finished Hairstyle

After using the spray, use a round brush with 1/2 to 1 inch barrel size. Wrap the hair around the brush 2 and 1/2 times to make an adequate curl. Now, use the blow dryer on a low setting to not dry too fast and overextend from root forward. Curl as you pull the hair down, creating gorgeous loose curls with lots of bounce and body. After you have blow-dried and curled the whole head of hair, use a minimal hold hairspray, so the hair does not get too heavy. A shine spray is best. Spray and lift the hair in place. Voila, you have a beautiful head of long hair for over 50.
