Hi, I'm professional stylist Kelly Britton for I am going to show you how to wear curly hair over 50 that does not look dead. If you are over 50 and you are trying to obtain that beautiful curly hair, but you have some problems with it looking dull and unmanageable and lifeless, there are ways to mask those problems and still get that beautiful curly hair you have always wanted.

Curly Hair Styles Over-50 Materials

The tools you will need are:
  • 1 Bottle of hair spray shine with thermal heat protection
  • 1 Rat tail comb for sectioning and parting
  • 1/2 inch barrel curling iron
  • 1 can of maximum hold hairspray

Begin Curling the Hair

First, spray the thermal protection shine spray all over your hair. Next, separate the hair into 1/2 to 1 inch partings, starting at the nape of the neck. Spiral-curl each section, starting at the scalp and moving to the ends of the hair last. Now we are going to spiral-curl the rest of the hair, moving, parting 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch pieces, up to the crown. After you get two rows of curls, spray with the extra hold hairspray to keep in place. If you are having a hard time with the back part of your hair, ask for help, or place a mirror behind you so you can see your work. Be careful to not burn your ears, this is a very sensitive area and hard to see, place your hand over your ear when curling this hair area to protect the ear.

When you get to the top section, curl all the hair going backwards with a barrel curl. I will show you how to do that, but you want to put the part underneath so there is no defined part area. You want to take your rat tail comb and section it off, moving from the crown to the bangs. Take the curling iron and bring it all the way to the edge of the hair, letting it fall. By doing this, it will provide volume at the top of the crown and help settle the part so that is does not go back to its original position. Once you get the hair curled from the middle of the head to the back, you can separate the front into a parting and continue with your spiral curls. Curling hair away from your face will help give you a more youthful look.

Now, if you have bangs like Connie, you will want to want to curl those forward, but only at the ends. Once the full head of hair is curled, take the rat tail comb, and take the edge and comb out the pieces; then, take the bristle side of the rat tail comb, comb over the part, and spray all over with the extra hold hairspray. If you want a little more messy or unkempt look, just take your hands and pull of your hair forward. Now you have a gorgeous full head of curls, and giving your hair life once again.
