Hi, I’m Kaytie Sproul, here for About.com, and today I’m going to how you how to use lip stain. For thousands of years, women have been staining their lips with everything from berries to dry jell-o mix. It’s a fresh and light alternative to heavy, pasty lipsticks, and you have several options when choosing a lip stain that’s right for you.

Dab Lipstain and Press Lips Together to Distribute Color

Lip stain products have been streamlined over the last several years, so you’ll most often find them in the form of a pen. Rather than coloring in every inch of your lips, which will leave far too much stain on them, you want to dab the pen on the center of your lips and gently rub and press them together. Next, dab the pen on the top peaks of your top lip and use your finger to smooth the lip stain into place.

Apply Gloss to Keep Lips Moisturized

Finish the look by applying a light coat of lip gloss, or balm. My lip stain pen actually has a lip balm included on the other end, so I’ll use a bit of that. Since you are actually staining your lips, the color should hold up well for several hours. However, if you have extremely dry or chapped lips, you may find that it deteriorates much more quickly than desired. You can ensure long wear of your lip stain by keeping your lips moisturized throughout the day, reapplying lip balm or gloss as they begin to feel dry.

Just a tip: Lip stain can dry lips out, so if you plan on using it daily you might want to consider doing an exfoliating and moisturizing treatment on your lips once or twice a week to keep them perfectly smooth. You can do this by rubbing a little petroleum jelly on your lips, and softly rubbing them in a circular motion with a toothbrush.

Clean Your Lips Before Re-applying Lipstain

While your initial application of lip stain should last for several hours, you’ll eventually find it necessary to reapply. Before adding a new coat of stain, gently dab off any remaining color or residue from the gloss or balm you used. Try to get your lips as clean and free of makeup as when you started the process. To re-apply, simply follow the initial steps you took to apply the lip stain. Don’t forget to follow up with fresh gloss or balm!

Lip stain is a great alternative for those of us attempting a more natural look. Once you’ve mastered the basics of applying it, you’ll be able to enjoy hours of coverage and the just-bitten appeal of your stained lips.
