Transcript:How to Treat Bacne

Hi, I'm Dr. Debra Jaliman, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City and author of the book Skin Rules: Trade Secrets from a Top New York Dermatologist here for About.com to talk about how to treat bacne or back acne. How do we treat it? What do we do?

Using a Sonic Cleansing System or Exfoliator to Treat Back Acne

One of my favorite things is to use a sonic cleansing system. Why is that? You want to get rid of all the dead skin cells on the back. And it really collects a lot of dead skin because most people don't reach their back that well. So you can use a sonic cleansing system that gets rid of 95% of all bacteria and gets rid of a lot of the dead skin. The way it works is it vibrates off the dead skin.

If you can't use that you can also use a back-cleansing system and some people use loofahs, some people use back brushes and it really helps if you use an exfoliating cleanser.

Other Treatments and Products for Treating Back Acne

Or some people use a cleanser with benzoyl peroxide. The benzoyl peroxide brings oxygen to the skin and the proprioni bacterium acne which causes the acne - what it does is: it's an anarobic bacteria, so it can't live in the presence of oxygen, so it kills the bacteria.

Some people use even anti-bacterial soaps. Whatever you choose to use, you want to rid yourself of dead skin, too much oil and too much bacteria. Because those are the main causes of acne.

The other thing you may want to use is salicylic acid, and salicylic acid comes in a toner, it comes in pads and what that does is it also helps exfoliate the back. I often prescribe antibiotic treatments for back acne. And what I like to use is foams. I find they're very easy to spread for back acne. And right now you can get these foams in generic form: they're very inexpensive by prescription and they really help kill a lot of the bacteria you find on the back.

If you find your back acne is very severe, you may want to see a dermatologist and get a prescription for an antibiotic. Because an antibiotic goes through the blood stream and really gets into the pores deeper and can really clear up back acne. So you have many different treatment options for treating back acne.
