Transcript:How to Touch Up Dark Roots

Hi, my name is Matt Lawrence with About.com and this is how to touch up dark roots.

Section the Hair

The first step we are going to do is a two inch section on the top of the head from the crown to the front, leaving the bangs out.

Mix the Color

Step two, mixing your color. I am using a dual-purpose lightener and a 20-volume developer. When mixing color, I like to use a small whisk because it helps fold the lightener into the developer.

Apply the Lightener

To apply the lightener use an application brush like this. All these supplies can be found at your local beauty supply. To start out take horizontal sections from the side. Make sure they are about one eighth of an inch thick. Get an eighth of an inch section and take your foil and put it right up on the root. Then take your lightener onto the brush and get a little bit on there so you on not making a mess. Get right up there to the root. Brush downwards toward the hair follicle. Fold it, lock it down with the comb, fold each side, and start your next section.

Continue taking one eighth an inch sections all the way around to create a rectangle. Next take a diagonal section from the middle of one foil to the other leaving a triangle section in each corner. Then you will take a 1/8 inch section of this and that’s what you will color. Continue adding foils to bangs alternating 1/8 in sections. This needs to process for 15-25 min.
