Hi, I'm Abby Feldman with About.com. Waves are gorgeous because they give your hair natural bounce and volume while framing your face. If you've got a long face, good news is, it's hard to go wrong with styling. Today, we're here to give you a few suggestions on how you can style your waves to best suit your long face shape.
Tips for Maintaining Wavy Hair With a Long Face
Before you start styling, you need to know how to look after your waves. You should shampoo and condition your hair no more than every other day. Washing your hair any more than this can make it dry and frizzy. If your hair is naturally dry to start with, apply a leave-in conditioner to towel dried hair and comb through with your fingers.
Long, straight hair doesn't work well for those with long faces because it pulls the eye down, creating the illusion of a longer face. You don't necessarily have to cut your hair, but adding waves will help give your style width and body to pull the eye up.
Tips for Enhancing Wavy Hair With a Long Face
Everyone's wave is different. It can vary from a loose natural kink, to a strong, wide curl. If your waves need a boost you can easily enhance them. Here's how:For starters, spritz towel-dried hair with texturizing spray. Spray from the roots to the ends to ensure an even application. If you have really thick hair, you won't need to apply as much. Next, using your fingers, scrunch your hair towards the roots as it air dries. Avoid brushing or combing your hair -- this will pull the waves out and create frizz.
If you'd like a tighter wave, style your hair using a medium width barrel curling iron. Make sure your hair is dry and one small section at a time, twist your hair around the curling iron. One you've curled all of your hair, spray lightly with hair spray and comb your fingers through to break up the curls.
Tips for Pulling Wavy Hair With a Long Face Up
If you want to pull your waves away from your face, you can finish by styling your waves into an up-do. One classic style is the ponytail: leaving a few front strands loose, pull your hair back into a messy ponytail or bun and secure with a ponytail holder and bobby pins if needed. Finish with a quick spritz of hair spray to give it hold.
If you want to keep some hair down, simply pin each side back using bobby pins and finish with hair spray. This will pull hair back from your face, while keeping your waves flowing. A nice touch for this style is using bobby pins or hair clips with jewels or other stylized details.
Additional Tips for Styling Wavy Hair With a Long Face
Lastly, if you're thinking about styling hair, remember these things: sometimes a long face paired with long hair can create an imbalance. Styling your bangs can help add contrast and create a nice shape around your face. Sweep your bangs to the side to keep your hair from weighing down your face further.
