Transcript:How to Know if Your Hairstyle is Aging You

Hi, I’m Melissa Millikan at Richard Herrera Salon, here today with About.com. Today, we’re going to be doing some hairstyling tips on how to know if your hairstyle is aging you.

I think hair is a huge part in making a look complete, I think doing different products in it and styling it, you can do some really cute things and you can make yourself look years younger if you do it the right way.

Age Appropriate Hair Styles Create Movement and Softness

Today, on Roberta, she has some curl in her hair, and it’s feeling fine and stringy, we want to bring it up and create a nice blunt, almost a bob of some sort. But since she has curl, she’ll be wearing it curly. So, we’re going to put in some long layers in the bob and that way there will still be some movement, and we just want to keep it really soft. It will make her look about five years younger at least. I don’t think people need to cut their hair off short, just because they’ve hit a certain age. I think it’s looking at the shape of their face. Gravity tends to just bring everything down, so we want to draw the eye up, so we need to bring the hair up.

Add Subtle Layers to the Hair Style

Right now I’m putting the length in the hair. I just want to get that in there and then I’ll go through and do some layers, but this way I know where my stopping point is. People maybe had a really great haircut when they were 25 and it was super trendy at the time, so they’re like oh it’s good, I’m just going to stick with this. It’s kind of time to look in the mirror and look at our face shape, and see what would flatter us the most.

Avoid Celebrity Hair Styles that are Aging

Someone that has it, is Cher but I think that is kind of her look. But at her age if she was actually in the real world, it’s way too harsh of a hairstyle on her, it could be a lot softer for her age. I think someone who is doing it really well is Diane Keaton, because she always keeps a real classic cut no matter what she does.

I’m going to power dry the hair a little bit and then once it’s almost all the way dry, I’m going to take the round brush and smooth it out. When you get older you kind of want to lighten things up a little bit, it doesn’t mean you need to go platinum or even very blonde, but having really dark hair doesn’t go well with fine lines or color of the skin. It’s just too much, too harsh.

Just softening it up, putting a few highlights in can make a world of difference. I think it looks great, it definitely gives her a little bit more of a spunky, edgy look, but it’s still appropriate, and it looks a lot healthier now. So now that we’ve shown you a few tips on how to take years off your age, if you need more information, stay here at About.com. Thank you for watching!
