Transcript:How to Keep Feminine-Looking Hair Over 50Hi, I am Kelly Britton here with About.com Style, and I am going to show you how to keep feminine looking hair for over 50.
Background Tips on Keeping Feminine-Looking Hair Over 50A lot of women have a problem keeping their hair looking feminine when reaching the age of 50, due to loss of elasticity and melanin. The hair becomes frayed and course and a completely different texture.
Things that can help are: conditioning, coloring the hair and also some techniques I will show called point cutting and thinning.
Supplies for Keeping Feminine-Looking Hair Over 50You will need:
- A plain pair of scissors or shears
- Thinning shears
Use Point Cutting to Keep Feminine-Looking Hair Over 50Point cutting gives a you a soft edge. Don't point cut too close the head unless you are trying to achieve volume. Comb and raise the hair up, leaving 1 inch to 1-1/2-inches of hair outside of your fingers. Take the plain scissor shears and make deep penetrating point cuts. This will create a soft edge and feminine look, and repeat throughout the hair.
It is up to you how much you want to cut, but making deep cuts should not lose any length in the hair, only soften the edge of the hair.
Try Thinning Shears to Keep Feminine-Looking Hair Over 50Another way to create a soft edge without using point cutting is to use thinning shears. These shears are designed to only cut 50 percent of the hair. Now you don't want to cut too close to the scalp --you only want to cut 1 inch to 1-1/2 inches at the ends of the hair.
Again, comb hair up, pull it down. Take your thinning shears and make one deep cut moving outward, now you will see how much hair comes off. You repeat, thinning shears they will take out more defined amount of hair.
Weaving Also Keeps Feminine-Looking Hair Over 50You can also use a technique called weaving: take the edge of the scissors and weave in and out like you are sewing a stitch, make one cut and move it in and out towards the ends. And continue on, and you can see how much hair is cut off.
Another tip to create really feminine look is to pull the hair around the face and cut it on an angle so each piece is curved along the jaw line.
