Hi, I'm Mattie Sproul, here for About.com, and today I'm going to be showing you how to do a day to night smokey eye. If you can keep it simple, your smokey eye will be subtle enough for a day in the office and sexy enough for a night on the town.

Supplies for the Day to Night Smokey Eye

Before we get started, you'll need the following items: face cleanser, make-up brushes, foundation, cotton rounds or eye lid primer, black, charcoal, or brown eyeliner, neutral, medium, and dark shades of eyeshadow, mascara and an eyelash curler.

Create a Smooth and Even Base for the Day to Night Smokey Eye

The very first thing we need to do is make sure we have a smooth and even base. After you've washed your face with a cleanser of choice, go ahead and apply your foundation with either a foundation brush or a sponge.

To make your smokey eye last even longer, there are a couple of things that you can do. The first is to lightly dab your eyelids with an oil-absorbing sheet or cotton round after you've applied foundation to remove any excess oils. Another option is to apply an eye-shadow base, known as a primer, to your eyelids and allow it to dry before applying your makeup.

Apply Eyeliner to Create a Day to Night Smokey Eye

Now that our base has been applied, we'll begin constructing our smokey eye with eyeliner. When doing a classic smokey eye, your eyeliner needs to be either black, charcoal or brown in color. We'll start by applying a thin line of eyeliner at the inner corner of the eye as close to the eyelashes as possible.

The line should gradually thicken as you move the liner outward on your eyelid. Once the line is complete, grab your smudge brush and work the liner down into the lash line using a circular motion. Be sure to also line the membrane of your lower eyelid with your eyeliner. Just a tip: A dry pencil liner will be easier to smudge for the smokey effect, unlike liquid liner which dries super quick and is meant to be smudge-proof.

Use Eyeshadow for the Day to Night Smokey Eye

After you've applied your eyeliner, grab your eyeshadow and your dome-shaped brush. Start by applying your neutral shade just above the eyeliner, all the way up to your brow bone. Next, apply your medium shade across your eyelid, blending it into your eyelid crease with your brush. Finally, apply your dark shade across your lash line, blending upward and outward with a smudge brush.

We're almost finished -- it's finally time for mascara. Apply two coats of black mascara to each eye and finish with your eyelash curler. You can also apply a light coat of mascara to your lower lashes for a more dramatic effect. And voila! Just like that you have a smokey eye that will take you from day to night in a snap.
