Hi, I'm Allyson Thomspon, a stylist here at Studio 23 in San Luis Obispo. I'm here today for about.com to show you how to do a side part bun updo for prom.

Supplies Needed for the Side-Part Bun Updo for Prom

For this hairstyle, you'll need the following items:

  • an assortment of bobby pins and hair pins
  • small elastic bands
  • hot rollers or a curling iron
  • a brush
  • a rattail comb
  • a back comb
  • a smoothing brush
  • clips for sectioning the hair
  • a workable hairspray
  • a super-hold hairspray

When styling your hair for prom, you want to make sure to start with clean, dry hair, whether you wash it at home or you have your stylist do it for you in the salon.

Create the Part for a Side-Part Bun Updo for Prom

For this hairstyle, the focus is on the side part, so using your rattail comb, create an off-center part on whichever side you prefer. This is where her side-part will be today.

After parting your hair, you want to create added volume in the crown, lifting the hair straight up and combing downward toward the roots. Smooth out the top layer when done backcombing.

Form the Bun for the Side-Part Bun Updo

Then take two sections at the back of the head, twist each and tie them into a knot. Pin the knots on both sides in a criss-cross fashion; this will help anchor your style. Take the remaining pieces and wrap them around your knot to create a bun, pinning as you go.

Finish the Side-Part Bun Updo

Loose, longer pieces in the front or on the sides can be pinned under for a more sleek look, or curled depending on your preference. Of course, you'll want to finish this with hairspray. And that's how you do a side part bun updo.
