Transcript:How Not to Look Orange Using Self-Tanner
Hey there, I’m Abby for About.com. Now, we all know about the dangers of UV rays and tanning beds. So today, more and more people are turning to self-tanners for a safe overall tan. But, if you’re not careful you could end up looking a bit orange. So, here are some great tips on how to get a great overall tan without that Halloween hue.Exfoliate Your Skin Before Applying Self-Tanner
The first step to getting an even self-tan is all in the prep. Exfoliate your skin to remove all the dry and dead skin. This will get your skin smooth and soft and ready to absorb the self-tanner. The next step is equally important. Choose the right self-tanner. There are a number of great self-tanners out there. But, you want to make sure you choose the one that best suits your needs.<Use a Self-Tanner With Olive and Not Orange Hues
When choosing a self-tanner with a dye color to it, always go with one that has more olive or grey/green tone to it. This will help you get a more natural looking color and not the dreaded orange. Once you’ve chosen the self-tanner for you, next it’s time to apply. If you’re using a cream tanner get a large makeup sponge to help you apply to avoid getting too much on your hands.Apply the Self-Tanner In Long Even Strokes
Using the sponge, start with the lower part of your legs, apply in long even strokes from top to bottom, go slowly around the entire bottom portion of your leg using the same even strokes. Once you’ve finished the bottom, do the same to the top half of your leg. For the arms, start at the shoulder and using the same smooth even strokes go all the way down to your wrists. You can use the same technique all over your body.Start With One Application Self-Tanner and Add as Necessary
Once you’ve finished applying, let it dry for at least 15 to 20 minutes to avoid streaking. Start with just one application and see how the color progresses. If it’s too light for you, you can always apply again. If you’re not a fan of cream you can always use a spray. Using the same technique of long even strokes, spray on slowly for the best results. For more beauty tips just like this visit us at about.com. Thanks for watching!
