Hi, I'm Kathy Yan, owner of Ohm Spa in New York City, here for About.com. Everyone likes clean and well-manicured and polished nails. In fact, strong and healthy nails are the result of proper care. A little basic nail care can go a long way toward keeping your nails in good condition.

Technique to File and Buff Nails

When you file, avoid a back-and-forth motion. Try to go only in one direction, with a forty-five degree angle to the nail base.

Instead of applying a nail polish, try buffing as a nice, natural alternative. It stimulates circulation, leaves a glossy shine on your nails, and lets the natural color of your nails show through. And it also can accelerate nail growth. Buffing can help remove any ridges or unevenness on your nails. It also makes the nails shiny and helps nail polish adhere to the nail surface for a longer period of time.

Gently rub the long side of the buffing cube back and forth horizontally across the nail. You will want to remove any visible ridges or unevenness on the fingernails. Buff the fingernail until you are satisfied with its overall smoothness, but be careful to buff your nails gently. Otherwise, you can thin out and damage the fingernail.

Tips for Filing and Buffing Nails

Here are some educational tips for healthy nails. Keep your nails short, with well-rounded tips to prevent breakage. Make sure you choose an acetone-free remover which prevents drying of the nails. Moisturize your nails frequently -- be sure to apply a moisturizer after a bath or removing fingernail polish.
