Hi, I'm Mandy Day for About.com, and today we're talking about common hair color mistakes to avoid. With all of the at-home hair coloring options available these days, women have a wide range of choices for every shade and every budget. Here are some common mistakes to avoid if you choose to do your color at home.

Preparing for At-Home Hair Color

Don't buy a kit before examining your skin tone and actual hair color to determine if you have a "warm" or a "cool" color. You know you have a warm tone if your skin tans easily and if your hair has a bold, layered color. You have a cool tone if your skin is more fair and creamy, or if your hair has a more uniform color. Don't choose a kit that isn't designed for your skin tone. Examine the colors available and pick what suits you. The box will have pictures, but don't trust them completely. Let your own hair guide you, and never try to go more than two shades lighter or darker than your original hair color.

Dying Your Hair at Home

Once you've chosen your color and you're ready to dye your hair, don't skip reading the instructions -- every hair color kit is different. Also, don't color your hair anywhere other than an easy-to-clean, well-ventilated area, and wear gloves to protect your hands and furniture from dye. Never wear nice clothes that dye could ruin; use throwaway items or cover up with a towel. After you've dyed your hair, don't use shampoo to rinse the dye out. For upkeep, avoid using normal conditioner. Many kits will include special conditioners, but you can also buy color-safe conditioner in a salon.
