Hi, my name is Tricia Mann with About.com and this is 10 tips for applying eye shadow. I will demonstration the essential techniques on my model, Jenna, so you can see the finished result. Let’s get started.

Start With a Primer Eyeshadow

First, when you apply eye shadow you first want to use an eye shadow primer to help the eye shadow adhere and ensure proper blending. Using a primer will help the eye shadow to adhere to the lid and prevent creasing.

Use the Right Eyeshadow Brushes

The essential tools for a flawless application are your brushes. You will always get a professional application if you use the right brush. They are the best investment that you can make. These are the 3 essential brushes.
  • First you have your flat brush, which is used for packing eye shadow on lid. This is what you would apply your base color with.
  • You have your pencil brush, which is used for putting pigment like darker color into the crease, so you can use it for contouring. You can also you it for shading eyeliner for that smoky eye look.
  • And then you have a rounded tipped blending brush. What this is going to do is give you that airbrushed look, where you have really nice blended eye shadow.

Apply Eyeshadow Color Correctly to Create Shape

When you apply eye shadow you are going to want to tap off any excess powder from your brush. That will allow for the color to go on evenly and prevent it from falling underneath your eyes. A white eye shadow is a great way to make your eyes pop. Choose a matte or shimmer color. You can sweep it across the eye or use it to accent your brown bone. Contouring will help define the shape of the eye. Use a darker color in crease. That will create depth and really give your eyes a nice definition.

Different Eyeshadows Serve Different Purposes

If you are still having trouble blending, try using a shimmer shadow instead of a matte color. The pigments in the shimmer shadow always tend to blend a little bit easier versus a matte color. If you want to wear one shade from lash line to crease try using a neutral color or light pastel eye shadow. That way your eyes do not look too dark or too flat.

Try the Smokey Eyeshadow Technique

For simple smoky eye start with a neutral color all the way from your lash line to brow bone. Then use a darker neutral color from lash line to crease. Blend with you rounded tip-blending brush. That’s 10 tips for applying eye shadow. Thanks for watching. If you want more information you can visit About.com.
