Transcript:How to Make Kansas City Rib Sauce
Hi I am Gina Miller with a great recipe for Kansas City BBQ Rib Sauce from About.com's Barbecues and Grilling site.
Unlike it's cousin, St. Louis BBQ sauce, Kansas City BBQ rib sauce is more of a rich, thick, tomato based barbecue sauce, with a traditional combination of sweet and a touch of heat that's great when you're smoking beef or pork ribs on the outside grill or in your oven.
Ingredients for the Kansas City Rib Sauce
So here are the ingredients you'll need to make Kansas City BBQ Rib sauce:
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup vinegar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons paprika
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon cayenne
Here is a quick tip: If you don't like spicy foods, adjust the heat in the BBQ sauce by cutting the amount of cayenne you use by one half.Or if you like it hot, simply increase the cayenne for a blazing hot sauce.
Prepare the Kansas City Rib Sauce
Now let's prepare the Kansas City BBQ Rib Sauce. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over a low heat for about a minute then add the minced garlic and cook until brown. Now add the ketchup, water, vinegar, brown sugar, paprika, chili powder and cayenne pepper. Stir thoroughly and simmer for about 30 minutes then let cool.
After the sauce cools, pour into an air tight container and refrigerate. Let the Kansas City BBQ Rib sauce rest overnight, this will give you the most enhanced flavor.
Tips for Using the Kansas City Rib Sauce
When you're ready to use, let the BBQ sauce come to room temperature and use generously on your pork or beef smoked ribs. This recipe makes 2 1/2 cups and is enough sauce for approx 2-3 pounds of ribs.
