Transcript:Indoor Grilling: Easy Steak and Onions

Hi, I'm Roblé for about.com. Today I'm going to show you how to grill indoors while achieving that outdoor flavor grilled. We will be using a hanger steak with red onions. We will be making grilled hanger steak and grilled red onions. Here we go.

Grilled Hanger Steaks Ingredient

Here are our ingredients:
  • 1 pound of whatever steak you would like to use. I am using hanger steak
  • canola oil
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander
  • kosher salt
  • black pepper
  • 1 red onion (cleaned and sliced one half of an inch thick)

Season the Steak

The first thing that we want to do is to generously season our steak with salt and pepper. Pat that in and repeat this process on the other side of the steak. This fat on the other side of the steak I want it to stay there. It is flavor. Most of it will cook off during the cooking process.

So now our steak in seasoned. The next thing we are going to do is to take our smoked paprika, our chili powder and our cumin. We're just going to mix this together in a bowl. I'm using my finger. Your hands are at your best tool in the kitchen. That is all mixed together and the smoked paprika is what's going to give our steak that outside cooked flavor. The smoked flavor from the paprika is what's going to do it.

So we are going to sprinkle this rub all over at the steak like that and pat it in there. This is what you call a dry rub. Now we will repeat that process on the other side. Get some of this dry rub. Very fragrant stuff is. Just going to pat that right in there.

Refrigerate the Steak

Now we are going to cover this with plastic and we will let it chill out in the refrigerator for at least a half an hour. This will help the flavors to marry into the steak.

Season the Onions

While our steak is in the fridge we will take these onions and drizzle a little bit of oil over them. Season them with a little bit of salt and a couple of turns from the pepper mill. Going to flip them over and rub some oil into the other side. Season this side with a little bit of salt and pepper. And that we now have our seasoned red onions. So one half hour later our steak is nicely dry marinated. What I'm going to do now is take it and cut it in half. Cut it in half right down the middle.

Indoor Grilling: Grill the Onions

Now I'm going to oil the steak with a little bit of oil. Just mix them around in the oil. Once they are oiled they are ready to cook in a George Foreman type of grilling machine. It's hot and ready to go. So we are going to take a couple slices of the onion and pop them right inside. Let them go for about two minutes and we will check them. You can cook them as much or as little as you would like.

So two minutes later they have some pretty nice grill marks on them. I am going to turn them about 45 degrees and I will let them go another minute or so. One minute later. Look at those beautiful grill marks. Pull these right off. Save them for later.

Grill the Steak

And now for our steak. Take this and place it right on the grill. I'm going to close it and let it go for one minute and then check on it. I want to cook this to medium rare. So, one minute later our steak has nice grill marks on it. I'm just going to turn it is 45 degrees and let it go for another minute. So one minute later and our steak is done.

Serve the Grilled Steak and Onions

Our steak right on top of those onions. I'm going to top this off with a little bit of barbecue sauce and you are ready to eat.
