Transcript:How to Make Baked Beans
Hi, I am Gretchen Siegchrist for About.com Food, and I am going to show you how to make baked beans.Bakes Beans Ingredients
These beans technically are not baked. We will actually cook them in a Crockpot. For this recipe, you will need:- 2 lbs. of soldier beans
- 3 quarters cup of maple syrup
- 1 onion
- pinch of salt
Prepare the Beans
Begin by rinsing the beans and sorting them. Get rid of any that are cracked or broken or just do not look very good. Place the beans in a large pot and cover them with five to six inches of cold water. Cover the pot and place it in the refrigerator. You will want to let the beans soak for ten to twelve hours or overnight.Boil the Beans
Drain the beans and add fresh water to the pot so that they are covered by an inch or two. Boil the beans on the stove for about fifteen minutes or so, until the skins start to come off if you blow on them.Add Remaining Ingredients
Cut the onion into large pieces and add it to the bottom of the Crockpot. Drain the beans and pour them over the onion. Now we will add the maple syrup and the salt and cover the beans with about an inch or so of water.Cook the Baked Beans
Cover the Crockpot and cook the beans on low for about six hours. You will need to keep adding water to the beans as they cook. They should be covered with water until the last two hours of cooking. These beans are great on their own or as a side dish. Thanks for watching. To learn more, visit us on the web at Food.About.com.
