Transcript:How to Make Five Pancake ToppingsNothing dresses up pancakes more than a special topping. I'm Stephanie Gallagher for About.com, and today, I'll show you five different toppings to make your pancakes the best ever.
Ingredients for Pancake Topping: Caramelized BananasOne of my favorite ways to top pancakes is with caramelized bananas. To make them, you'll need:
- 2 Tbsp. butter
- 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
- and 2 bananas, sliced
Instructions for Making Caramelized BananasMelt the butter in a large skillet. You want to make sure you use a large skillet, because the bananas need to fit in a single layer.
Ok, add the brown sugar and stir it into the melted butter. Now add the bananas and spread them out in a single layer. Let them cook undisturbed for 3 minutes. This is very important - if you start turning and sliding them around, you'll just end up with banana mush, not golden caramelized bananas.
After 3 minutes, flip them over. See how nice and brown they are? Just cook on this side for a minute and pour over your pancakes.
Easy Pancake Topping IdeaWant something with a bit more color? Try sprinkling fresh raspberries over pancakes. Add a little shredded coconut and some miniature chocolate chips. And voila! Instant sweet special occasion pancakes with no effort at all.
Ingredients for Pancake Topping: Raspberry ButterAnother fun thing to do with fresh raspberries is to make raspberry butter. You'll need:
- 4 Tbsp. butter, softened
- 1/2 cup fresh raspberries
- 2 Tbsp. powdered sugar
- 3 oz. cream cheese
Instructions for Making Raspberry ButterBeat the butter, raspberries and powdered sugar together. I'm using an electric mixer, but this would work even better with a food processor. Add the cream cheese and beat until combined.
Spoon a dollop of the raspberry butter on your pancakes. Drizzle on some maple syrup and top with fresh raspberries. Finish it off with a sprinkle of powdered sugar.
They'll be begging you to make this one again.
Instructions for Making Blueberry SyrupBlueberry syrup makes a great pancake topping too, and you can make it in advance.
Take 1 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries and place them in a saucepan. Add 1/4 cup of orange juice and 1/4 cup of powdered sugar. Bring to a boil over medium-low heat, and let it cook until it becomes thick and syrupy.
Then pour the blueberry sauce over your pancakes. Dust with a little powdered sugar and enjoy.
Instructions for Making a Sweet Nutty ToppingFinally, try my favorite sweet nutty topping. Start by adding about a cup of chopped walnuts to a dry skillet. Toast over low heat. Toss the nuts occasionally, and watch them carefully. They burn easily. When the nuts start to smell toasty and they're golden brown like this, they're done.
Turn off the heat and add about 1/2 cup of maple syrup. Stir to warm the maple syrup, then pour over the pancakes.
And those are your sweet pancake toppings.
