Hi, I'm Mikah Sargent for About.com, and I'm going to show you how to make a heart-shaped cake for Valentine's Day.
On February 14th, people around the world celebrate Valentine's Day by giving chocolate, flowers, and cards to their loved ones. A heart-shaped cake can be a fun and unique way to bring a little extra sweetness to the holiday.
Ingredients for a Heart Shaped Cake
To make a heart-shaped cake, you'll need the following items:
- Cake mix (enough for two cakes)
- An 8-inch round pan
- An 8-inch square pan
- A serrated knife
Preparing the Cake
First, prepare enough cake batter for two 8-inch cakes. After greasing your round and square cake pans, divide the batter evenly between the two pans and bake.
When the cakes are finished baking, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool. Once the cakes have cooled, remove them from their pans and place them on a large plate or cutting board. If you do not have a plate or board big enough, you can layer foil or parchment paper onto your counter to use as your work space.
Making a Heart Shape
Using a serrated knife, carefully cut the round cake in half. Turn the square cake so that one of its corner is facing you. Place the two halves of the round cake on the top two sides of the square cake, forming a heart shape. Trim the cakes so that the sides and tops of the cake are even, this may mean trimming some cake off of the bottom and sides of your cakes.
Decorating the Cake
Once your heart-shaped cake is formed, ice your cake, starting on top and then covering each side. You can even personalize your cake with designs, sprinkles, or a nice message for that special someone.
