Transcript: Chocolate Chip Cookies

Hi, I'm Rachel Edelman for About.com Food. Today I'm going to show you how to make chocolate chip cookies from scratch.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Ingredients

For this recipe you will need:
  • 1 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2-3 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Mix Butter and Sugar

Place 1 cup or 2 sticks of butter in a large mixing bowl. The butter should be at room temperature before you start. Add both sugars to the butter. With an electric mixer, cream the butter and the sugars for about 3 minutes. Every once in a while, stop and scrape down the sides of the bowl. You'll see that it becomes light in texture.

Add Eggs and Vanilla

Beat the eggs a bit and add them to the mixture. Next add the vanilla. Mix again. You'll see the mixture will thicken a bit.

Set Oven Temperature

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Mix Dry Ingredients

Now in a separate bowl, we're going to mix our dry ingredients. Combine the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Use a whisk to mix it all. Now add 1/2 of the flour mixture to the batter. Mix it together until smooth and then add the rest of the flour. Mix it again. And finally, stir in the chocolate chips.

Bake the Cookies

Take one or two tablespoon of the batter, and with your hands, roll it into a small ball, about 2 inches wide. Place each cookie a few inches apart on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Place them in the oven and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are light brown.

Allow Chocolate Chip Cookies to Cool

Move the parchment paper, with the cookies, on to a cooling rack. Let the cookies cool a bit and enjoy.
