Hi, I'm Rachel Edelman for About.com Food. Today I'm going to show you how to make apple dumplings.Apple Dumpling Ingredients
For this recipe, you will need:- 1 pkg. pastry squares
- 3 tbsp. butter
- 3/4 tsp. of each cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg
- 1/3 c. sifted brown sugar
- 4 medium apples
- 3 tbsp orange marmalade
- 3 tbsp pineapple juice
- 2 cups of brown sugar
- 2 cups of water
Mix the Spices
In a bowl, pour the melted butter, the spices of cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg, and the brown sugar. Stir until it forms a paste.Prepare the Apples
Peel the apples. Use an apple corer to cut the apples away from the core. Next, chop the apples into bite size chunks.Fill the Dumpling Pastry Squares
Now take out the pastry squares. Roll them out and cut them into 6 squares.Place a small spoonful of apple on the center of each pastry square. Next, spoon some orange marmalade around the apples. Then, spread some of the paste over each apple.
Wrap the Apple Dumplings
With a brush and some water, moisten the edges of the pastry. Carefully pick up one corner and drag it to the opposite corner covering the apple. Continue to wrap the apples with the pastry. Use your finger to seal the edges.Bake the Dumplings
Grease a cooking dish using non stick cooking spray. Place each dumpling carefully on the cooking dish. Put them in the oven for 30 minutes.Prepare the Apple Dumpling Sauce
While the dumplings are cooking, make the apple dumpling sauce. Place a saucepan over medium high heat. Then, pour the water, fruit juice, and sugar into the pan and simmer until the sugar is dissolved. Remove the pan from heat.Serve the Apple Dumplings
Take the dumplings out of the oven and baste with sauce at least twice during the 30 minutes. Once they are done, take out of the oven and place one on your serving dish. Serve warm with ice or whipped cream. Enjoy. Thanks for watching. For more information please visit us at food.about.com.
