Hi! I am Gretchen Nelson and we are here in Boise, Idaho at the Other Mothers Children Store to talk about things to avoid when you are buying gifts for children under two.

Children's Gifts Should Be Safe and Age Appropriate

Safety is something you always want to keep in mind with any child. Avoid small pieces, small balls, and anything that can be a choking hazard. A simple test for you to do at home is to find a toilet paper tube and literally any toy that can be dropped through that tube is too small for your child who is two and under to play with. You also want to avoid toys that have chords that are longer than six inches and toys that aren't washable. Obviously you want to stay away from toys that look breakable and may have sharp edges that can cut, scratch, or pinch the child.

Avoid Toxic Materials Used in Children's Toys

You also want to avoid letting your child play with toys that have small magnetic pieces and those that are made from PVC or brightly colored plastics because they maybe toxic. I've even noticed in toys stores lately that there are labels on the toy boxes that show and prove that they have been tested for toxicity, so that you know that that is a safe bet to spend your money on.

If you choose to buy a toy second hand or from a resale shop, I think that's a great idea. You just want to make sure that they don't have chipped paint or finishes because that can lead to further breakage of it and can be not safe for your child. Costume jewellery is really fun for little girls to play with, but it's not a good idea because it usually contains lead or chemicals and it also has pieces that they can pull off and put in their mouths.

Don't ever give your child toys that are too complex or difficult because that would just frustrate them. You want to give them age appropriate toys. Toys that encourage learning and stimulate development are always a good bet. You always want to follow manufacturer's age level recommendations on the toy boxes and then you'll know that you are going to be doing the very best for your child.
