Clean a High Chair Regularly to Remove Bacteria

But independence does not come easily or neatly. Apart from the mess of pureed carrots smeared all over your child's high chair, a more serious concern is the bacteria harbored there. In fact, the food tray of a high chair may contain more bacteria than the handle used to flush your toilet.

A high chair must be cleaned and thoroughly disinfected to prevent illness. Be sure to check the owner's manual before disassembling or cleaning your child's high chair so you know if any parts need special care.

Use a Soft Cloth to Clean a High Chair

Gather your cleaning supplies. You will need a soft cleaning cloth, cleaning solution, and possibly a brush. Begin by removing any objects from the chair such as toys or dishes. Wipe off any large particles of food with a soft, damp cloth.

Remove the high chair tray, seat cover and straps. Inspect the seat cover for any holes or tears that may allow mildew growth. If the tears are large, you may need to purchase a new cover.

Use Gentle Cleaning Solutions to Clean a High Chair

Disinfect the chair by wiping it down with a gentle cleaning solution. You can use a mixture of dish detergent and water, or baking soda and white vinegar. Baking soda helps remove odors and can be used as a gentle scrub for dried-on food, while vinegar is a natural disinfectant.

Pay special attention to crevices in the chair, as food can collect in these areas over time. Use a small, soft brush, such as a toothbrush, to clean hard to reach areas. Wash the seat cover and straps according to the manufacturer's instructions. If the straps are not machine washable, try soaking them in a solution of water and laundry detergent. Use a brush to scrub away dirt and dried-on food.

Tips for Maintaining a Clean High Chair

Reassemble the high chair. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure your child's safety. To maintain your child's high chair, wipe it down with a damp cloth after every meal and snack. This will make the chair easier to clean later on.
