Transcript:How to Choose Diapers

Hi, I'm Holly Deambrosi for About.com. Whether you prefer cloth or disposable diapers, there are several things to keep in mind when choosing the right diaper for your baby.

Fit Is an Important Factor When Choosing Diapers

One of the most important considerations is fit. Just as every baby is different, so is every diaper. Size is determined by weight, and most diaper brands follow the same sizing guide. Diaper packs should be clearly labeled by size and the weight range.Look for leak guards in the legs and an elastic waist and legs for a more secure fit. Really good diapers also feature a pocket in the waist band for added leak protection. Since you'll probably have to test drive a few before finding the perfect fit, buy just one pack or type of diaper at a time.

Consider Absorbancy When Choosing Diapers

Absorbancy is another variable among diaper brands. Try to find a diaper that absorbs moisture away from the baby's skin. Otherwise, liquid will pool and leak out the legs, front or even back of the diaper. And the risk for diaper rash may increase. Because some babies are allergic to disposable diaper components or have very sensitive skin, many parents choose to use organic cotton cloth diapers. Companies now offer hypoallergenic disposable diapers made of natural materials, however, many of these still add lotions and ink printing on the diaper.

Cost Is a Big Factor When Choosing Diapers

You want the best for your baby, but if you have a budget to keep, you may need to make that a consideration as well. Often cloth diapers are believed to be the least expensive option since they will be purchased only once. Time and expense for cleaning can add to the cost, however, and if you choose to use a diaper service you may actually spend about the same amount monthly as you would for disposable diapers. One way to save money on disposable diapers is to see if your preferred brand offers a diaper at a lower cost, perhaps even under a different brand name. Some online companies give discounts and free shipping if you subscribe to purchase diapers from them on a regular basis, say, every two months. And you can find coupons to use with these deals that will really bring the cost down.
