Transcript:What to Avoid on Baby ClothesHi, my name is Monica Willis. I'm the owner of Corduroy Kid in Brooklyn, New York. I'm here with about.com and we're going to talk about things to avoid when buying baby clothes. It's very important to remember that your baby needs to be kept safe, comfortable and of course, cute.
Avoid Synthetic FabricsReally the most important thing to avid when buying baby clothes is synthetic fabrics or scratchy fabrics. You know synthetics are a real fire hazard always, always, always look for natural fibers. Wool, cotton and bamboo will all breathe and allow the baby to perspire and the perspiration to evaporate rather than over heating.
Great Baby Clothes FabricsThis is wool fiber. Which actually people don't believe can really keep a baby cool but they do. Bamboo is a new fiber that's very popular now. It's incredibly soft. It's so incredibly soft against a baby's skin. And then, of course organic cottons which are now incredibly popular and come in fantastic color combinations and are really available everywhere.
Avoid Buttons and Choking HazardsFor the baby's safety sake, any clothes that have adornments on them, ribbons, buttons, ties, they all look really, really pretty but they're completely impractical and really unsafe. Always try and keep clothes very simple for babies. They're going to look cute in everything you put them in. Really simple lines. Easy on and off is very important.
And, again with the idea of buttons around babies - it's really the number one choking hazard. Even with toys, just something like this you know it's beautiful but keep it up on a high shelf until the baby's three years of age.
Buy Comfortable Clothes for BabiesIt's really important to consider the comfort of the baby so always avoid things that you think might be irritating for a baby so elastic exposure, exposed elastic, always make sure zippers on garments have um, are covered, like with a fabric, so they're not rough against the baby's skin. Uh press tabs and snap closures on the back. Now these can be a little bit of a problem. You know, they can be harsh for a baby. Also, sometimes, hoods on the back of onesies, that's very popular for newborn babies because they can bunch on the back.
Two piece outfits can tend to be a little uncomfortable for babies, try and keep them in one piece outfits, a little simpler, they won't irritate you know the new umbilical cord or anything like that.
Choosing Socks for NewbornsAlso consider when you're shopping for socks, patters are really really cute for babies. But for newborns really keep them plain because what happens - on the inside of the sock pattern is all these little loops on the sock and babies toes can get caught in here and they can be incredibly frustrating for kids and you have no idea why your baby's screaming - and socks are probably the last place you're going to look.
Choose Low Maintenance ClothesAlong with the comfort of the baby, I think it's also important to consider the comfort level of the parents. So, you really want to buy clothes that make that incredibly easy. Look for clothes that have snap closures in them, in and out of the legs. This makes diaper changing so much easier.
Always look for envelope openings for baby clothes, very easy to pull over the heads, they stretch real easy, really well. Always look for kimono openings. You don't even need to go near their head you just slip their arms in. These are fantastic.
Buy Baby Clothes That Wash EasilySo always look for things that are easy care. You know, throw in the machine, throw in the tumble dryer. Get them in, get them out.
