Hi, I'm Monica Willis, I'm the owner of Corduroy Kid in Brooklyn, New York, and I'm here for about.com. Today we're going to talk about the importance and value of sleep sacks for babies and infants. What Is a Sleep Sack?
Sleep sacks have been popular in Europe for the past few decades and have just gained popularity in America in recent years because they provide great protection for children against sudden infant death syndrome.A sleep sack is a cross between a sleeping bag and a blanket. It's a fantastic alternative to loose blankets.
Sleep Sack Varieties
There are many different varieties of sleep sacks. One of the great ones that I love is a one of the sleeping gowns for newborn babies. This is a very popular style. It has an elastic opening in the bottom, so you can just lift it up quickly change the diaper, you're not dealing with snaps all night long. It also has the little hand covers which is great so baby's don't tend to scratch themselves during the night. So, another style which is really popular for babies when they get to be about ten pounds and definitely older, is, this is a classic sleep set which is the, as you can see, it looks exactly like a sleeping bag and a blanket.
Now, a lot of people come in and ask why there is no sleeves in these ones and the reason is you put your baby in what your would normally put them in to go to bed, like a onesie or a long sleeve kimono top, some sort of pajama top. And then you put the sleep sack on and then you have air and circulation that's going around their arms, so they don't overheat in bed, which is something of course you never want your baby to do.
Sleep Sack Material
When you're looking to buy a sleep sack, it's really, really important with all baby clothes to buy all natural fibers. So, always look for something that's in a really nice cotton, cotton flannels, often wool, a wool flannel - something that's going to be a natural fiber that has a certain amount of breathability. And the reason they make them so long is so that the baby has mobility in the sleep sack. So, the baby can roll kick, it's not going to get tangles in any blankets, it's not going to get frustrated, it has room to move.
Car Seat Sleep Sacks
Another sort of sleep sack, which is really popular as well and it has a hole in it for your car seat, so then you don't need to wake your baby up. You can transfer it directly from the car-seat into the stroller into the car. This is a lighter weight version but they definitely do this in heavier. This is for summer sleep suit.Sleep Sack Pricing
They really range from about 28 dollars to really the highest end would be about 48-50 at the most. But the great thing about the sleep sack is that you really get a lot of longevity out of it so it's really a great investment. Thanks for watching and to learn more you can visit us at About.com.
