Transcript:Save Money on Baby Clothes

Hi, I’m Monica Willis, I’m the owner of Corduroy Kid in Brooklyn, New York, and I’m here for About.com. Today we’re going to talk about ways to save money when you’re buying baby clothes. And there are many!

Size Up Baby Clothes

So, one of the first ways, a great way to save money when you’re buying clothes is to really think about sizing up a size and really letting people know to always size up. Babies grow very quickly and even if it’s a size larger, like a onesie, it doesn’t really matter. It’ll be a bit long in the body. That doesn’t really matter because often you’ll be putting pants on over the top. And with the sleeves you can always just fold them back and cuff them. You know with a romper or a grow suit it really doesn’t matter if they’re a size too big or not. Because the legs will be a little longer, the babies are lying down anyway, so, their feet will be covered. So you can cuff them up.

Adjust Clothes as Babies Grow

You get a lot of these footed rompers, for your kids, and they’re great when they’re little babies. But unfortunately, your baby can’t grow with a footed romper. So, what happens is as they grow in length they begin pulling on the shoulders and very uncomfortable.

So one thing you can do to save money is cut the feet off. And then you’ll get at least another three months wear out of it. And if you’re lucky into summer you can keep cutting it and it becomes really cute, like little shorts.

If you put just the footless rompers, they’re a much better buy and then your baby can just keep growing and you’re not going to go through clothes quite as quickly.

Choose Versatile Clothes

Think about versatility as well when you’re buying baby clothes for people or for yourself. A great example is little dresses like this, can become tunic tops as babies get older. Also, there is a very popular trend, reversibility - which is another fantastic way to get more longevity out of your kids clothing. So, something like this little tunic top can become a dress and tunic top and it’s reversible, so there’s many uses.

Buy Unisex Baby Clothes

And it’s really great to think about buying unisex clothes, because then if you anticipate having more children you can definitely reuse them or hand them down. And you’ll already have an existing wardrobe for the next kid, kids. So outfits like this are really great, simple, definitely unisex.

Find Baby Clothes Sales

Always keep an eye out for sales and clearance sales and stock clearances in stores because you’re always going to need basics like onesies lap tees, these are things, socks, shoes, you can use them all year round so you can always shop ahead and you know that sooner or later your kids are going to wear them and everyone loves a bargain.

Take Advantage of Baby Hand-Me-Downs

Lastly, of course, the most obvious way to save money of course is hand-me-downs, consignment stores, second hand stores, and yard sales with your local community. Always remember when you buy kids clothes to really try and buy better quality, so even when you’re looking at second hand shops, you know buy high end brands. You know they’ll wear better they won’t over stretched, they’ll last longer and then you can hand them down as well.
