Hi, I'm Kate Schmitz, co-owner of Flying Squirrel, a children's clothing store in Williamsburg Brooklyn, for About.com. Today I'm going to show you some great gifts for babies.

Gift Sizing for Babies

People, often, don't know what to buy for babies - they don't understand what sizes to get. They don't understand what a baby needs as opposed to a child. They don’t necessarily have to buy a tiny baby size.

A baby can wear a onesie that's slightly too big and then it will last longer because this is a three to 6 onsie, so three to six months, and some babies just grow out of this quickly. And so if you buy 6-12, which is just a little bit bigger, still very tiny, your baby can wear it for longer. And, if you buy 12-18, which is something that many people do not think of doing you’re going to be giving the person, the mother of the newborn, something that she has none of. No one is going to be giving her gifts in this size range.

Buying Special Items for Babies

When we think of gifts for babies, we think of necessary items that are on the luxurious side. So, for baby, you definitely need some thing to cover its feet and a great gift would be something really fancy and expensive that the mother wouldn't necessarily buy for herself. But they are just the warmest and cutest little things you can put on a baby's feet. This is a well known brand of baby booty that is a very typical gift item.

One thing I tell people to buy for a baby is a onesie. You wouldn't necessarily buy an expensive onesie for yourself, but still, it's not a very high priced item.

Clothing Gifts for Babies

Clothing is a great gift. These are kind of cute funky pajamas, that a mother wouldn't necessarily go out and buy for herself, but it might be a fun gift for your more rocker friend.

This is absolutely gorgeous - it's a romper. I think many mothers wouldn't buy it for themselves, but I think many mothers would really love to have it. It's beautiful and it looks so cute on the baby and it's exactly the kind of thing I think of when I think of a baby gift for someone maybe closer to you.

Blankets for Babies

It's an organic blanket for the baby to hold as a comfort blanket. So, there are lots of little things for the baby to play with. It could be your child’s favorite comfort item - it might be something you keep forever.

This is a stroller bag - you attach it to your stroller. It's like a sleeping bag in the stroller. And, it lasts from infancy through 4 years. Not to mention the fact that it will last long enough for you to use it on a second or third child.

Inexpensive Gifts for Babies

Some people are looking for gifts for an office mate or an acquaintance or their brother's nephew's friend and some people are looking for gifts for their sister or best friend.

One less expensive but still very nice thing to get is a bib. These bibs are bibs that a mother would probably not buy for herself, but just a beautiful soft pleasing thing for the mother and the baby. And still, you're only spending $25.00.

Another great gift for a baby is baby legs. They're leg warmers that you can put on the baby's legs or arms if you happen to go somewhere that's cold all of a sudden and your baby has bare arms you can just put this right on his arms.
