Hi, I'm Ben Kurtzman for About.com. Today I'm going to give you tips for dressing a baby in cold weather.

Babies and Temperature Regulation

Babies are not good at regulating their temperature, so you want to be careful when dressing them and make sure they are not too hot or too cold.

General Rules for Winter Dressing

The general rule is to give your baby one more layer of clothing than you are wearing. So if you have a tee shirt, she should have a long sleeve. If you have a long sleeve, she should have a sweater.

How to Determine a Baby's Temperature

Do not feel baby's hands and feet to determine her temperature. Babies do not have great circulation, so these can feel cold even if she is not.

Instead, feel your baby's neck or the small of the back. If these spots are cold to the touch, your baby is probably chilly. If they are warm and sweating, your baby is too warm.

Easy Ways to Keep Babies Warm

Babies lose a lot of warmth through their heads, so you should always give them a hat when you are taking them outside. Their feet should always be covered also, of course.

One piece outfits are best for the cold, because you will avoid gaps where your baby's skin would be exposed to cold air.

At night, keep your baby warm with a wearable blanket instead of putting real blankets in her crib.

You can use a snow suit when taking baby out into the cold, but you do not want her wearing something bulky like this in the car seat.

Babies should wear normal clothes in a car seat, so that the straps can be pulled tight. Then, you can cover them with blankets for taking in and out of the car.
