Transcript:How to Drain Oil From a TankHi folks, Marc Stephan here for About.com. Draining oil from the tank of your car is something any car owner should be able to perform. Alen from AV Motorwerks is going to show us how to do it properly.
Draining Your Oil TankHi, we are here at AV Motorwerks. My name is Alen with About.com. You will need the following tools: A 3/8" socket set, a 3/8" ratchet, and sometimes even your hands will work. When you are under the car, locate the drain plug and open it with your ratchet. Keep in mind that the oil might be hot. You'll want to contain the oil in an approved oil container so you can dispose of it. Replace the crush washer that's on there; a new one should come with the new oil filter. Screw the oil plug in by hand with the new washer. If you need to use a ratchet, don't screw it too tight, since the oil tank is made of aluminum.
That was a great explanation, Alen. Thank you! If you would like to learn more about doing repairs on your car, check out About.com.
