Transcript:Most Common Asthma Triggers

Hello, I'm Dr. Robert Eitches, here for About.com. Let's talk about the more common asthma triggers, like colds or viruses.

Common Comorbidities of Asthma

With a cold or a virus it irritates the lung airways. And when you irritate the lung airways you get inflammation and spasm leading to a cough or wheezing or chest tightness or shortness of breath.

Other comorbidities include sinus disease. When you have sinus disease, you can get secondary infections, which in turn set off the chest. So, instead of just treating your chest you need to also treat the sinus disease. Maybe it requires a medication or a different type of therapy to allow the asthma medications to work more successfully.

Common Asthma Triggers

In terms of pets, cats are probably the biggest offender. However dogs or any other furry animal can also set off the problem. Tobacco smoke can also cause asthma, even second-hand smoke. Second-hand smoke can bring on an asthma attack, be it in your house, in a bar, or any outdoor place.

Outdoor air pollution, especially in urban environments, such as with cars or trucks or factories, can also set off the chest. Be careful too in terms of medications. Many patients who have high blood pressure are on beta blockers. Beta blockers in and off themselves can cause bronchospasm.

I'm Dr. Robert Eitches for About.com. Thanks for watching.
