Transcript: Install a Paper Towel Rack

Hi! I'm Ami Young with About.com Home.

Today I'm going to show you how to mount a paper towel rack in the kitchen. For those of you lacking counter top space at home, this tip can be especially useful!

What You need to Install a Paper Towel Rack

For this project, you're going to need:
  1. A wall-mountable paper towel rack (you can usually pick up one at any home-based department store or your local hardware store)
  2. 3 quarter to 1 inch screws
  3. A phillips head screwdriver
  4. A number 2 pencil

A Good Place to Install a Paper Towel Rack

First, you will want to figure out where the most space-saving place to hang your rack is in your kitchen. Today, we're going to hang it right here underneath this kitchen cabinet so its conveniently located, yet out of the way.

Now, sometimes it can be difficult to get those screws started while holding the rack up at the same time, so after I line up the bracket to where I want to mount it, I'm going to outline the drill holes with my number 2 pencil first. Then, after removing the bracket, I'm going to go ahead and just start to screw each screw in where they will go, just to make a little starter hole for each. Remember! Right for Tight, Left for Loose.

Now, once I've made my starting holes, back your screws back out. Place the paper towel rack back to where you will mount it – Checking that all of the screw holes are aligned with the screw hole marks you made earlier, and then screw in each screw in clockwise. Screw in each, just about halfway.

Then, once youre sure you have the paper towel fixtures alignment the way you want it, go ahead and tighten each of the screws down the rest of the way. Once the rack is mounted, add your roll of paper towels and give it a spin!
