Transcript:Explanation of What Autorun Is

Hi I’m Greg Creech and I’m going to be your computer tutor today. We’re filming today for About.com. Today I want to talk about autorun.

How Autorun Affects Your Computer

It’s one of those items that we love to hate in using our computers. That in the middle of something that you want to accomplish, all of a sudden your system slows down to a crawl and it's because something is running in the background. I guess that’s why they call it autorun because something will automatically run.

An example of autorun is when you insert a CD into your computer, it will automatically start playing the music or if you insert a blank CD it will ask you something called autoplay. What do you want to do with that blank CD? Do you want to burn a data CD, do you want to burn a music CD. So autoplay and autorun have different types of working with it. The autorun is a feature that allows applications, programs, devices to run without the user commanding, starting or intervening.

Autorun is Common in Antivirus Software

Autorun is also popular with antivirus packages. So autorun will start your email scans. It will start full system scans and it will start other types of scans that you may not be aware. You certainly want to have autorun with working with the internet so that it can scan your information before a virus gets into your system. So autorun is a terrific kind of functionality of using the computer. However, you want ways of disabling it and controlling autorun rather than having autorun controlling you.

Thank you and have a great day. Please see About.com for more information.
