Transcript: Tuna Melt Sandwiches

Hi I'm Heidi Dehncke-Fisher and welcome to About.com Food. Today I am making one of my favorites: the tuna melt.

What's a Tuna Melt?

In its simplest form, tuna melts are tuna salad on the bread of your choice, and then melting the cheese on top while crisping up the bread in the oven.

But there's a lot you can do to your melt. The cheese doesn't have to be Swiss - it can be cheddar, or muenster, or even havarti. The bread doesn't have to be rye - it can be sourdough, French, Italian, or even a bagel.

Tuna Melt Sandwich Ingredients

To make my favorite tuna melt combination, you will need:
  • 2 6 oz. cans tuna fish
  • 1 bunch of scallions chopped
  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise – more if you like
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 6 tomato slices
  • 6 slices of cheese
  • 2 slices bread or a roll

Mix the Tuna Ingredients

First open and drain the tuna juice from the cans. Place the tuna into a medium-size mixing bowl and add your chopped scallions, salt and pepper, and a dusting of garlic powder, and mayonnaise. Mix it well and set aside.

Pre-heat your oven to 350 and slice your tomatoes.

Assemble the Tuna Melt Sandwich

Now pile your tuna, the tomato, and your cheese onto your bread.

Melt the Cheese

I place everything in a bread-baking pan so it's easier to handle in the oven. Let it melt for about 10 minutes. You can also melt them in the broiler but check them often so they don't burn.

Wow – that looks great. Thanks for watching. To learn more visit us on the Web at food.about.com.
