Hi, I'm Maria Saracen from ArtfullyNourished.com and this video for About.com is all about the top foods to eat for longevity.
Of course, any diet that's high in whole, unprocessed vegetables, fruit and lean animal protein is going to help you stay feeling and looking healthier than a diet that's full of processed food. That said, however, there are many foods that are believed to be especially beneficial for longevity. Here are some on that list.
Foods With Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Walnuts, flax and fatty fish like salmon and sardines. All these foods are high in Omega-3 fatty acids which are believed to help fight inflammation. Make these foods a regular part of your diet to help boost your heart health, brain health and overall well-being.
Fruit and Vegetables
Next, we have leafy green vegetables which include, kale, collard greens and spinach. Why are green vegetables good for longevity? Well, because they are packed with chlorophyll and contain plenty of health-promoting vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants.
Speaking of antioxidants, don't forget to eat your fruit, especially berries, which are also full of phytoflavinoids, vitamins and minerals.
Spicy Peppers Are Healthy
Next on this list are peppers like cayenne and chili peppers. These spicy peppers contain capsaicinoids which are believed to have powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
Fiber and Fermented Foods
Fiber is another factor that promotes longevity. It helps keep your digestive tract healthy and also helps regulate your blood sugar. You can find good amounts of fiber in fruit, vegetables, whole grains and beans.
Next we have fermented foods such as yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut and tempeh. These foods are teaming with probiotics and enzymes that help keep your digestive tract in tip-top health.
Avocados and olive oil are two heart-healthy fats that can help with longevity. And not only are they good for you, they can also help you feel fuller longer, so that you don't have the desire to munch soon after a meal.
Dark Chocolate Can Help
If you have a sweet tooth, this last food is for you...chocolate! But not any kind of chocolate will do. It needs to be dark chocolate - and the darker the better. Also, you don't need to in indulge in more than a small amount to get a powerful boost of antioxidants and minerals or to feel chocolate's feel-good effects!
