Transcript:Tips for Getting an Ashiatsu Massage

Hi, I'm Missy Anderson, licensed massage therapist and owner of Barefoot Body Works in San Luis Obispo, California. I'm here today for About.com to give you tips on getting an Ashiatsu massage.

What is Ashiatsu Massage?

Also known as Oriental Bar Therapy, this type of massage originated in the Far East and has been around for nearly 3,000 years. The word, “Ashi” translates to “foot,” while “atsu” means “pressure.” To put it plainly, the massage therapist will mostly be using her feet to administer this massage technique.

What Can You Expect in Ashiatsu Massage?

Before getting started, your massage therapist will have you fill out a health questionnaire. She'll then review it with you, asking questions, and addressing any concerns that you may have. It's important that you disclose any medical issues you have, including allergies, so that she can adjust her technique to best meet your needs.

In many ways, Ashiatsu is very much like a Deep Tissue massage. You can expect slow, deep strokes, and direct pressure on certain muscles. Because your massage therapist is able to stand upright, balancing her center of gravity with overhead, parallel bars, she can use her body weight to provide any level of pressure that's necessary, whether it be light or incredibly intense. Once you've rolled onto your back, your massage therapist will finish your massage with a combination of hands and feet.

Communicating with Your Massage Therapist

Your massage therapist is happy to hear feedback; feel free to communicate throughout the massage. As with any massage technique, it's imperative that you speak up if you experience any pain or discomfort. Ashiatsu massage is meant to be intense, but your massage therapist can lighten the pressure if needed. On the other hand, if you need more pressure, let her know and she will provide it.

What is Proper Etiquette for an Ashiatsu Massage?

In terms of etiquette, it's best to remove all your clothing, underwear included, when getting an Ashiatsu massage. This will allow your massage therapist to really work problem areas without certain articles of clothing impeding the process.

In addition to alleviating general back pain and muscle tension, Ashiatsu is a very beneficial form of massage for athletes and those with larger-than-average musculature. You may also be wondering, or even worried, about your massage therapist using her feet to massage your body. Practitioners of Ashiatsu take the cleanliness and sanitation of their feet very seriously, so your massage therapist should go through a regimented process of properly preparing her feet before putting them to work on you. Ashiatsu is an ancient technique that works wonders for many individuals. Next time you're in need of a massage don't be afraid to give it a try.
