Transcript:Quick Tip: How to Sprout Chia Seeds

Hi I'm Maria Saracen from Artfully Nourished.com and in this video for About.com I'm going to show you how to sprout chia seeds.

How to Start Sprouting Chia Seeds

To do this, you can use a glass bowl, an unglazed pie plate there are many options that can work well.

The first step is to sprinkle your chia seeds over the surface you're using and make sure there's enough space between them.

Next, you want to wet them but don't use too much water. If you soak chia seeds, they'll become very gelatinous and turn into a porridge.  So keep the water to a minimum. I find that gently misting them with a spray bottle works well.

Once that's done, move the chia seeds to a place that's warm and fairly dark - but don't put them in a cupboard or closet because they need ventilation. You can cover them, but make sure you leave room for air.

Check on them every 8 hours or so and make sure they're moist but not drenched.

As soon as you see little green shoots starting to come up, you can put them in a sunny area.

Keep wetting them and letting them grow until they're a healthy green color and have open leaves. The process can take about a week.  And finally they're ready to be enjoyed!
