Transcript:How to Grow and Juice Wheatgrass

Hi, my name is Reinhard Lorenz, and we are here with the Wheatgrass people in Albuquerque, NM for About.com. Today we are going to show you how to grow wheatgrass, we’ll talk about the many health benefits that this amazing green stuff has, and we’ll demonstrate how to make juices and smoothies.

Wheat grass is actually full of nutrition! You can use wheatgrass for juices, smoothies and salads. If you start adding wheatgrass to your diet, you are doing something really good for yourself. So lets see what secrets Brian has to share about growing this fabulous stuff!

Germinate Hard Red Winter Wheat to Grow Wheatgrass

The first thing you wanna do, this is your wheatgrass seed, hard red winter wheat is what it’s called. You soak it in water from 6 to 8 hours, and then you germinate it 10, 12, 13 hours depending on the air temperatures.

Then you get yourself a 10 x 20 inch, a normal growing tray. I use organic, composted soil, you use two scoops, on the bottom of the tray. You smooth it out – like this. You water your tray down, like that. Then we are gonna put our seed on, which is a 13.5 inch container, full of your germinated hard red winter wheat, and I just put it in the center of the tray.

You’ll have to experiment with the amounts you put on the tray. You dont want it too thick, and you dont want it too thin, as you want a good flat of wheatgrass.

Vitamins in Wheatgrass

Wheat grass is a living food. An ounce of the juice has the nutritional equivalent of 2.2 pounds of fresh vegetables! It contains protein, chlorophyll, calcium, Vitamin C and is rich in micro-nutrients. Wheat grass can help your body cleanse the lymph system, build blood, remove toxic metals, and restore overall vitality. So, lets see how you can actually get this stuff into your juices and smoothies!

Properly Extract Wheatgrass Nutrients

What you need is a wheat grass juicer. A wheatgrass juicer extracts the juices at slow speed, it works somehow like a press. Normal juicers have an RPM of around 1000, and at that high speed you might damage or completely ruin the enzymes, How and they are the green goodness in the grass!

Once you have extracted the juice, you may either drink it pure as a shot, or mix it in with other fruit and vegetable juices. By the way, it also comes as tablets and powders which you can buy at your local health food store. Wheatgrass is a fabulous, healthy green drink that will spice up your smoothies and enhance your overall diet.
