Transcript: Create a Glossy Postcard Ad

Hi, I'm Don Schechter for About.com Money. Today I'll show you the easiest way to create a postcard and distribute it. Postcard ads are a great, low-cost way to market your business.

Determine the Size of Your Postcard

It's best to make sure your design will fit on a postcard. Check with a printing company such as Vistaprint.com for proper postcard dimensions.

At the Vistaprint main page, under marketing materials, click 'Postcards' and then check the sizes. The standard size is 5.47 by 4.21, and the oversized size is 8.5 x 5.47.

Start a New Design in Photoshop

To start a new design, open Photoshop and click 'New' under the File dropdown menu.

In the new window, select 'Custom' under the preset option, and then change the dimensions in inches. This will allow you to create a design in the space allotted by a postcard.

Remember that the larger the postcard, the more expensive it will be.

Use Exciting and Concise Language

Now here are some tips about your design. You should keep it simple by writing less text and be concise. Keep most text away from the edges so there is no overlap or cut off in the final design.

Another way to make your design stand out is to attract attention using your text. Use exciting and clear language, such as "Now located in Coolidge Corner." This will motivate the reader.

Use Colors and Images to Attract Readers

You can use colorful backgrounds to catch your reader's eye. Also, feel free to use images on your postcard, but sparingly.

Don't forget to include your contact information so that interested parties can get in touch with your business.

Print Your Glossy Postcard Ads

Once you are done finalizing your design, print it using the best quality. To do this, go to 'File,' 'Print.' Click on 'Properties,' and then choose 'Best Photo.' Under paper options, select 'Glossy Photo Paper.'

When you are ready to send your postcards out, you can print the final design on your computer, or use a professional company such as Vistaprint.com.
