Hi, I'm Jade, a fashion blogger.  Today, with About.com, I'm going to show you how to wear a scarf as a headband including what types of scarves work best and tips for how to wear this look.Wearing a scarf as a headband looks great with any hairstyle - curly, straight, wavy, and with long or short hair, and is a great way to add extra personality to an outfit

Wearing Scarves of Different Materials as Headbands

Regardless of style, it’s important to start off with the right type of scarf. While any material will work, it's best to use a cotton scarf with a little texture to it so it doesn't slide on your head. You can still use a silk scarf but you will need to secure the scarf with bobby pins at the base of your neck and around your ears to make sure it stays on throughout the day.

Different Shapes of Scarves

We are going to use  two forms of scarves, long and square.

For long scarves, decide on the length and width you'd like; if your scarf is wider, I'd suggest folding it over once, and, if your scarf is really long, try wrapping it around your head twice before securing it in the back.

Also, if you have a long scarf, you can be a little more creative with how to tie it off. You can easily add a bow, tie it off on top, or, if you want to see more of the scarf, let it flow loosely around your shoulders.

When using a square scarf, prepare it by holding the scarf at two ends and twist the fabric so that the scarf wraps around itself completely.  Then, starting at the back, place the scarf around your head and bring the ends forward.  Twist the ends again around themselves and bring the scarf back towards your neck.  Tie the ends in a knot. Finally, tuck the tied part under the other section of the scarf. A big square scarf will always have a thicker, more casual look.

Different Thickness of Scarves

Scarves work with a wide variety of clothing styles. A thick scarf looks best with more casual outfits that are perfect at back-yard BBQ's, picnic or beach days, while a thin scarf can add that finishing touch to a more classy look.

Experiment with different scarves until you find the look that best suites you.
