Hi I'm Nick Jaynes for About.com and this is how to find a quality used 4x4 pickup truck. I'll be using information found on About.com's 4wheeldrive guide site.
Purchasing a Used Pickup Truck
Buying a used vehicle isn't always easy and can become quite a nerve-wracking experience, especially when considering the purchase of a four-wheel-drive pickup truck. Many automakers produce a four-wheel-drive pickup truck. The variations across the market are vast so it's not always easy to know what to get or what's best for you. Here are just a few of the top-rated four-wheel-drive pickup trucks.
A Used Ford Ranger
Edmund's has chosen two of it's favorite 4X4 pickups the Ford Ranger also repackaged as the Mazda B-Series) for the small pickup and the Ford F-150 for their large pickup choice. The Ford Ranger has been around for decades but its most modern iteration was released in 1992 and has remained relatively unchanged over the years. The Ranger is available with three engine options: the 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder, the 3-liter V6 and the 4-liter V6. The Ranger also comes with a four-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual. What sets the Ranger apart from a lot of it's smaller pickup truck compatriots is that it has never been offered in a quad cab, four-door layout and has remained in the standard or extended cab lay out. Also available are short or long bed configurations. The Ranger features a switch on the fly 4x4 system.
A Used F-150
The F-150 is the best selling vehicle of all time. There are more F-150s in the world than there are Australians. So it's no wonder it's a top choice. Versions of the F-150 vary widely across the years so finding exactly what you want might be tough simply due to the large number of options. The F-150 can be found with V6 and V8 engines of varying displacement. Also the numbers of doors, and bed lengths vary widely.
A Used Tacoma
Consumer reports has always given strong marks to the Toyota Tacoma small pickup. The Tacoma, unlike the Ranger, has seen numerous updates over the last several years. The Tacoma is available with either 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder or a 4-liter V6. Like the Ranger, it's also available with a manual or automatic transmission. And unlike the ranger, the Tacoma is available with standard, extra, or quad cab layouts.
As you can see, there are many different styles, sizes, and types of AWD trucks on the market. If you have a good idea of what exactly you'll need from a truck going into the purchase process, the easier your shopping experience will be.Always remember when buying a used vehicle of any kind to have it checked out by a mechanic ahead of time. When it comes to mechanical condition, never rely on the seller's word. Sacrificing an hour and a hundred dollars for a pre-purchase inspection can save you thousands down the road.
